A thought-provoking sci-fi drama about an astronaut's lonely journey through space and his unexpected encounter with an alien presence.
Spaceman features astronaut Jakub on a lonesome journey to the outer reaches of the solar system, while his marriage falls apart back on Earth. Along the way, he meets a mysterious alien creature named Hanuš, who helps him confront his past emotional wounds and failed relationships.
Although the film achieves genuine beauty with stunning space vistas and impressive visual effects, its greatest weakness is its extremely slow pacing. The story moves at such a methodical crawl that many viewers will find themselves checking the time repeatedly.
The gorgeous visuals and Sandler's dedicated performance can't make up for the tedious storytelling. Long, slow scenes of self-reflection and philosophical conversations with the alien soon become boring and repetitive, despite their artistic intentions.
Ultimately, Spaceman looks beautiful but feels empty to viewers. What could have been an interesting exploration of isolation and regret instead becomes a test of patience with its slow pace and overly abstract approach.
